According to official media, Israeli airstrikes in Damascus, the capital of Syria, have killed at least two individuals.

According to the news agency SANA, the incident on Wednesday happened near Kafr Sousa, which is the location of several military and security facilities.

The strikes have not been verified by Israel.

Al Jazeera authenticated footage from social media platforms revealed a multistory structure with an apartment on fire. Numerous parked cars in the vicinity sustained damage, and windows in neighboring buildings were broken.

People could be seen hurrying to pick up their kids from the nearby Al-Bawader Private School, where an empty bus had sustained damage.

Residential buildings and Iranian cultural centers are also located in the neighborhood. Ambulances raced to the scene after witnesses heard multiple consecutive explosions, according to Reuters news agency.

Who was slain was not disclosed by Syrian state TV. The two dead were inside an apartment, according to Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), an opposition war monitor headquartered in Britain. However, he did not reveal their identities.

According to Abdulrahman, the strike was akin to the murder of Saleh al-Arouri, a senior leader with the Palestinian organization Hamas, in Beirut, Lebanon, last month.

The explosions in Damascus, according to SOHR, were “a result of a new Israeli targeting of Syrian territory.”

The group claimed to have evidence of 13 Israeli attacks on Syrian territory since the year’s beginning, including eight airstrikes and five ground-based rocket assaults that destroyed over 31 targets and resulted in the deaths of 31 fighters and the injuries of 13 more.

According to SOHR, eight civilians—including a woman—were also killed in this year’s Israeli strikes.

Since supporting President Bashar al-Assad in the 2011 war that broke out, Tehran has increased its influence in Syria, where the US and Israel have been attacking targets they claim are connected to Iran for years.

Since October 7, when Hamas fighters attacked villages in southern Israel, killing over 1,100 people and kidnapping nearly 240 others, the attacks have increased in severity. Over 29,000 people have died in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israel’s fierce response to the unprecedented attack.

At least five Iranians were killed after an Israeli strike in the western neighborhood of al-Mezzeh in the Syrian capital last month destroyed a structure used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Iranian commander Seyed Razi Mousavi, an IRGC adviser in Syria for a long time, was killed in December by an Israeli air attack on a Damascus suburb. Over the past few years, Israel has also targeted members of Lebanese and Palestinian armed groups operating in Syria.
