Israel Agreed To Cease Gaza Attacks: It is anticipated that Ramadan would start in the evening on March 10 and end in the evening on April 9.
New York: According to US President Joe Biden, Israel has decided to cease military operations in Gaza for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, while Hamas is reviewing a draft proposal for a truce that calls for a halt to hostilities and the exchange of prisoners for hostages.
The most significant attempt in weeks to put an end to the violence that broke out in October of last year is the draft proposal, which a senior source close to truce talks in Paris told Reuters would allow hospitals and bakeries in Gaza to be restored and 500 relief trucks to enter the ravaged enclave every day.
It is anticipated that Ramadan would start on March 10th in the evening and end on April 9th in the evening.
“Ramadan is coming up, and there’s been an agreement by the Israelis that they would not engage in activities during Ramadan, as well, in order to give us time to get all the hostages out,” Biden stated while appearing on NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” .
He added that Israel had promised to let Palestinians to leave Rafah in the southern part of Gaza before stepping up its campaign to eliminate Hamas, and he warned that Israel risked losing international backing as a result of the high number of Palestinian deaths.
In his Monday-recorded and Tuesday-broadcast remarks, Biden stated that there was a basic understanding between the two sides for a truce while hostages were released. By the next Monday, he expressed his hope for a ceasefire in the fighting.
“The number of innocent deaths is just too high. Furthermore, Israel has reduced the pace of its attacks in Rafah,” Biden stated, emphasizing that a brief cease-fire will expedite the Palestinians’ quest for their own state.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, is against a two-state solution.
According to the senior source, the draft proposal calls for a ten-to-one ratio of Palestinian detainees for Israeli captives.
According to the proposal, Israel would release some 400 Palestinian captives and not detain them again, while Hamas would release 40 Israeli hostages, including women, children under 19, the elderly over 50, and the sick. This information was provided to Reuters by the source.
In an attempt to prevent an Israeli attack on the Gaza city of Rafah, where over a million displaced people are taking refuge at the southern border of the enclave, mediators have stepped up their attempts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza.
Following the 1,200 deaths and 253 hostage-taking by Hamas on October 7, Israel began a ground invasion on Gaza, which resulted in the confirmed deaths of almost 30,000 people, according to Gaza health authorities.
